Project Story
Jostein Albert is an exposed fish farm developed for Nordlaks and built at CIMC Raffles. The facility is designed as a ship-shaped structure for exposed aquaculture, with a scale and design language closer to maritime construction than traditional fish-farming technology.
The design challenge was to enable aquaculture at more exposed locations while ensuring fish welfare, operational reliability and the handling of large biomass. With six large pens and a total capacity of up to 10,000 tonnes of live salmon, the facility is designed for a completely different operational scale than conventional aquaculture installations.
The structure is moored to allow it to orient itself according to weather and currents. This is a key design principle: the facility is not only designed to withstand environmental loads, but uses maritime logic to respond to them in a controlled way.
For NSK Ship Design, Jostein Albert is about combining maritime expertise with aquaculture. The hull form, mooring system, pen geometry, working areas and technical systems have been developed to provide good conditions for the fish and a safe working environment for the crew at an exposed location.
Jostein Albert demonstrates how the interface between ships and aquaculture facilities can create new solutions for the future of aquaculture.
